  1. In the ending of this book, which is part four not much is happening. I feel like the ending could have been more complex, but it was more simple and it got to the point. Only event that happened was that Laila and Tariq had gotten married also soon after Laila talked Tariq into going back home to Afghanistan to see how much better it was after war. Laila felt like it was her duty to honor her brothers who died in war by going back home to stay and help rebuild her home country. When she came back she visited the mullah’s son, looking for Mariam but finding out saddening news that she died. Soon after finding this out the mullah’s son told her that the mullah was deceased also. The mullah’s son gave Laila a box with a letter from Jalil that was for Mariam. After some time of staying in Afghanistan Laila gets a job working with Tariq, also volunteering for the orphanage which her daughter Aziza stayed at for some time. Laila’s son Zalmai kept asking when is his father coming home but she never knew what to tell him. She struggled with the thought about when will she tell him the truth, also struggling with thoughts and sadness about Mariam. Later Laila finds out that she is pregnant with her third child and never thought about any boy names. Laila decides that the baby will be named Mariam, in honor for everything Mariam has done for her in her life.

    2. Good job summarizing Part 4, we just about talked about all the same things. This would have a good book! What you think? Trey!

  2. Part four shifted into present tense, and was basically the happily ever after for Tariq and Laila. They got married after their arrival to Pakistan, and Aziza and Laila helped work. Aziza finds out that Tariq is her real father and she is relieved and happy about it. Zalmai on the other hand reject Tariq kindness and ask for Rasheed. Laila always told him that Rasheed left and may never come back again. When they hear about the attack on the world trade center and that the Americans decided to join the war, Tariq get hope that the war will soon end. Laila however thinks that war of any kind is wrong when innocent people are dying from bomb explosions. After about a year Laila asks Tariq if he would like to make back to Kabul. The kids aren’t that happy about the move but are explained to that there will no longer be random bombs falling from the sky. Laila gets a box from Mullan son that Jill left for Mariam many years ago. In the box was a tape, letter, and a sack with money. With the money they opened up a school at the orphanage that Aziza was sent to, and Laila became a teacher there. After about 2 years the drought ended and the rivers started to flow again. Laila became pregnant again, and if the baby was a girl she would name her Mariam.

    1. I thought the same of about part four in the sense that Laila and Tariq had ended up together and that they returned to Afghanistan after all the war had happened and had died down. The Taliban and everything is still occupying the region because they are not able to rise and army good enough because they are so un organized and too weak of a country to have any of attempt to overcome and get rid of all the terrorist groups in the region

  3. Part four is the most interesting in my part because it is the ending and it is in more of a modern day setting and the years from the beginning and the end. The beginning was when Afghanistan was first invaded and that the Taliban had taken control of the country after they kicked out the invaders after years of fighting. The people of Afghanistan had to flee from the country to try to find better lives for their families. As for Laila she kinda got screwed because she got pregnant by Tariq and that she was told that he died trying to escape. She had to marry Rasheed to be able to support her kid. So now she has two kids. One form Tariq and one from Rasheed. She was debating on whether or not to tell Rasheed’s son how he had died. If she did tell him would she have told him the truth, that her father was murdered by her and Mariam. Her choice was good in not telling him because it could ruin their life as well as hers. For the sole fact that she does not want to ruin her sons life and have that hanging over her head that people know and could turn her in and she would be killed. The book ends with Laila and Tariq returning to Afghanistan and seeing the difference of what the effects of the war had done on the country as a whole and that how much her life is different than of those who are just now living their lives.

    1. I agree I thought part four was pretty interesting because of the fact it was set in more of modern day setting. And so I could understand and relate to it better.

  4. Part 4 of A Thousand Splendid Suns started off with knowing that Tariq get headaches from what he went through and a little after we learn that they get married. Later Laila tells Aziza what she already figured and that Tariq is her real father. Zalmai though is mad that he can’t see his father, Rasheed, but Laila and Tariq don’t want to tell him that Rasheed is actually dead because of what he could do or the effect it would have on him. Laila debates telling him but in the end she never tells him the truth. At a different time they all go to the Mall and in a window or mirror Laila see them walking together and to her it look like that are a normal family, to us we would look twice but to Laila she is overjoyed becase even thought they might not be living the life she wants, they look like a true family. Later we find out that the US has went to war on Afghanistan and it gives Laila hope because maybe the Taliban will be forced out and they will be able to go back home. Eventually they decide to go back home and Laila is happy, she feel connected to her home and to Mariam. She gets a job as a school teacher and goes back to the place where Marian grew up felling closer to her than ever. Lastly Laila gets pregnant again and she says that it is a girl and she will name her Mariam. I find the end of the book great; it had a better ending than some other books.

    1. I liked all of the description from beginning to end of part four. Another thing I thought was neat was that you included the part about Tariq getting headaches due to his past and everything he has been through.

  5. Part four of A Thousand Splendid Suns shifts from the past tense to the present tense. Laila and Tariq ended up getting married and they live in Muree with their two children, Zalmai and Aziza. Laila, Zalmai, and Aziza stay withTariq while he works at the hotel, helping him with small tasks.Tariq and his birth daughter, Aziza bond immediately, but Zalmai is still distant after the loss of his father. Everyone is safe and happy, but still a little timid due to everything they have gone through. It doesn't help their worry when Tariq learns that Massoud, one of the original leaders of the Mujahideen, has been assassinated. Two days later, Tariq and Laila are at the hotel when they see a BBC report on the September 11 terrorist attacks. Shortly after, the reporters begin talking about the Taliban and Osama bin Laden and Laila and Tariq learn that the US has declared war on Afghanistan. One night, Tariq suggests that Afghanistan might be better off after this war, but Laila is too scared by her experience with war to agree. Eventually, in 2002 things are beginning to stabilize in Afghanistan after the Taliban is out of power, and the presence of the ISAF gives citizens some degree of security and normality. Even though things are going well in Murree, Laila is restless and tells Tariq that she wants to go back to Kabul to help rebuild. He agrees. On the way back, after an emotional goodbye and a long bus ride, they arrive in Herat, Mariams hometown. Tariq spends the day in the city with the kids while Laila takes a cab to Gul Daman, the village where Mariam was raised. First, Laila visits the home of Mullah Faizullah. She meets his son, Hamza, who tells her that the Mullah has passed. Laila tells Hamza what happened to Mariam. Hamza leads Laila to the house where Mariam grew up. Laila walks through the now-abandoned home alone, imaging what it would have looked like when Mariam lived there. After Laila's finished, Hamza gives her a tin box. He says that Jalil gave it to him in the hopes of getting it to Mariam. Laila opens the box back at the hotel. There are several things inside. There's a cassette copy of Pinocchio. There's also a letter to Mariam from Jalil in which he apologizes for his lack of courage and tells her how much he truly loved her as a daughter. The last item in the box shocks Laila—it's Mariam's portion of Jalil's inheritance. Laila and her family now live in Kabul. Laila used Mariam's money to fund Zaman's orphanage, where she and Tariq now also work. At the end of the book, we learn that Laila is pregnant with a new child and that the whole family regularly debates baby names. They know better than to debate girl names, though. If it's a girl, Laila already knows that her name will be Mariam. I really liked the ending when we learned about what Jalil had really thought about Mariam and what Laila does with the money. I also like that they know they will name the baby Mariam if it is a girl in honor of Mariam and her life.

  6. Part Four of a Thousand Splendid suns is pretty short. It is only has four chapters. Tariq and Laila get married and are adjusting to life together. Laila's daughter bonds with Tariq right away . But Laila's Son does not because of the loss of his own father. One day they walk past a big crowd of people. So they go see the what everyone is looking at and they are all watching a tv with the news on it. It is talking about the attacks of 9/11 in America. But Tariq and Laila dont see it as so bad because America is now fighting Afghanistan , which they hope will help make Afghanistan a good place to live again. So Laila wants to go back Kabul and live there. Tariq agrees that it is a good idea. On their way back to Kabul ,Laila goes back to where Mariam used to live and she does so a lone. At her house Laila tries picturing what Mariam's life was like back then. After she is there , a man named Hamza gives her a box that was left by Jalil in hopes it would get to Mariam someday. Inside the box is a letter written by Jalil about how much he did like her as a daughter , a movie , and her portion of Jalil's inheritance. They begin to adjust to life back in Kabul very well. Laila and her family are trying to help build the city back up.They are even using the Orphanage that Laila's daughter was put in because of Rasheed. They change it to a school .Laila is a teacher at the school now.She is also pregnant with anotherchild.Tariq and the kids debate about what the kids name will be if it is a boy. They do not talk about names for girls because Laila says that if it is a girl her then everyone knows that she will name her after Mariam.

  7. Part four of the book was the shortest part. In part four its starts out with Laila and Tariq getting married and staying together. All of part four was mainly just about Laila and Tariq being together and being in past tense to changing to present tense. Aziza found out that Tariq is her real father and she really likes him. Tariq and Aziza become really close. In the chapters at the end of the book when it went to present tense it started talking about 9/11 attacks. Tariq and Laila talked about wanting to go back and live in Kabul when the war ends. They both think its a really good idea and they plan to head back to Kabul. When they both do go back to Kabul Laila goes to where Mariam lived and remembered her. When she was there a man came up named Hamza who gives her a box from Jalil but it was suppose to get to Mariam. In the box it was items like a letter that Jalil wrote, movie, and Jalils inheritance. They started getting their life back how it should be. They used the orphanage that Aziza was put in because of Rasheed. They changed the Orphanage into a school they all help in the school Laila was one of the teachers.

  8. I think part four is the beginning of happy ending. Laila and Tariq got married and they have happy life with the kids. Aziaza finally has great time with her father and she can live with her real family and never worry to be sent to orphanage again. However, Laila still has to keep the secret about Rasheed's death to Zalmai because he is too small to know the news. Laila is not like her mother, she enjoys the life now and she always takes care of her children. She has an argument with Tariq about the war. Rasheed said after the war, Afhanistan will be better; however, Laila totally disagrees with his claim, she said war is always bad, innocent people are dying because of the war. I love Tariq character because he always respects his wife not like Rasheed. He loves the children and he takes care of them all the time. Even though Laila and Tariq are having happy life in Mareer. However, Laila wants to come back to her country and I really like the idea because it shows the deep love of Laila to Mariam and Afhanistan. Tariq is such the most wonderful husband because he said he would follow her at the end of the world. At the end of the book, the letter from Jalil makes me cry. He regrets what he did to Mariam and I think he is not really bad father. He still visits her every thursday in the past and when he died, he sent Mariam a letter with the Pinnochio movie which Mariam wanted to watch with him and her bothers, sisters when she was a kid. A sack of money for her. Sadly, Mariam can never read the letter and know how regretful her father was. It is very good book to read

  9. Part four of the book was my least favorite because it was a little preditable. The whole story had you on your toes wondering what was going to happen next. I still think it was a good ending but it just wasn't the ending I was looking for. The only shocking move was that she would move back home. I don't know if I was her I would want to go back to a place with so many bad memories. Everywhere she would look flash backs would come. I understand her son not liking Tariq because it's not his dad. Deep down he probably upset that his dad left him and there's a new guy he has to accept and live with. That wouldn't be easy for anyone. I thought it was pretty nice that she went back to be a teacher to teach the youth in her home town.

    1. I agree. I think Tommy has a really good point about the end of the book. The ending was not a good ending as he said i agree most of the book kept you on your toes. The other thing I agree with him is of Laila going back to where they left bad memories.

  11. Well, Part 4 was the shortest and in my opinion, the least interesting. It was clear and predictable that Laila and Tariq were going to move back to Kabul to get married. It is a very fairy tale ending because although Mariam died, the two lovers found a way to be happy. So it went from Part 3 being very involved and action filled to a much more mellow setting. Now although that what everyone was expecting, I didn't mind it because that's how the story is suppose to end. I really like how the beginning g foreshadowed the ending because in the beginning, Mariams mother was teacher her how to live. She was giving Mariam all the tips she needed to be successful in life so it ends with Laila raising her kids the way she and Mariam were brought up so I thought it was very cool how it all connected.

    1. I don't agree with Dom that the ending isn't all that because it ties the book together and gives a final closing on the true meaning behind Laila's life.

  13. Part 4 was indeed the shortest part of the book, but it was a very significant part to the whole book. Tariq and Laila finally get to live happily ever after. Laila starts to come to the realization of what Mariam truly sacrificed for her and how they were truly family. Laila and Tariq end up going back to Kabul in hope for a better future. The war on Afghanistan is about to start since 9/11 takes place. Laila knows she must live her life to be a teacher of positive actions. Laila pretty much states that if she has a girl baby that it will be named Mariam so that Mariam and her whole story will forever be in the family line of Laila. The book gets its name from a poem about Kabul and Kabul is the final resting place and peace in Laila and Tariq's lives.
