  1. Part three starts with Laila coming back to reality and waking up in Mariam's living room in recovery. She was hit with a bomb and her whole family was killed besides her. Her and Mariam become really close and they start to be treated poorly by Rasheed. They come up with a plan to leave and escape. When they go to execute the plan they are stopped by Military and brought back to Rasheed. He beats them repeatedly and is planning to kill Laila for putting escape into Mariam's head. Mariam goes to the shed and grabs a shovel and kills Rasheed. She is caught and sent to trial which was very fast since they didn't believe her. She is placed in a prison and waiting to be executed. I feel bad for Laila because she lost her parents and now she is going to lose her fill in parent who saved her life.

    1. You brought up a good point with how rough life for Laila is. She is constantly losing people in her life and it is just getting tougher. The only person she has left is Mariam and the amount of depression she must feel is unreal.

    2. hummm what can I say about you Jake Kimbrough... I guess you tried, and that's all that matter. If you don't get a 100 percent then at least you will get something.

  2. Part three although being the longest section of the whole book was also the best and the saddest section. The fact that Laila just after trying so hard to caught back up with Tariq and his family was bombed and knocked unconscious engage the reader's attention when starting part three. Laila wakes up in the care of Mariam and Rasheem, she is the only one to survive out of her family. While living with Mariam and Rasheem she come to know how poorly Rasheem treats Mariam. Not only does he abuse Mariam, but he also does the same thing to Laila. At one point he locks the both of them in a room for three days without food and water. Laila feels that it should have been her father taking the books out of the house not her. She think that if he would have then he wouldn’t be dead. After a couple of day a man come to talk to her about Tariq and tells her that he was injured badly, and lost his other leg trying to cross into Paskin. He tells her that after three days Tariq died, but he spoke of her often. Rasheem tries to make her feel better at dinner by putting on a sympathy show, Mariam notice that the show is romantic and that he really planning on taking on a second wife. After dinner she confront him about it and he says yes he was thinking about asking Laila to marry him. Mariam tells Laila about Rasheem Proposal and immediately accepts it.

  3. Part three in this book is one of the larger sections but also the more descriptive and informational sections. This section had shed light on a lot of problems with the Afghanistan government. I really like this portion of the book because a lot is happening but I also don't like it because of its sadness and tragedies. I knew from the start when I heard that Rasheem took Laila in and took care of her, that eventaully he would want to marry her. I also didn't know that the guy who gave Laila the news about Tariq's death was a fake, hired by Rasheem. I regained my happiness when I read that Tariq showed up at Rasheem's home for Laila. I was so excited and happy for her to see him, but I was shocked because I believed that he was really dead. Soon enough Rasheem's loyal son told on his mother and Tariq, Rasheem got angry and tried to kill Laila but around that time Laila and Mariam had a bond. Mariam seen Rasheem suffocating Laila, so she struck him twice with a shovel killing him. I was kind of happy when i seen that she killed him but also saddened again when Laila offered Mariam to leave with her, Tariq and the children. Laila never seen Mariam after she left, and found out she was killed in a public execution. After Laila left her,Tariq and the children escaped successfully and had lived happily.

  4. I feel really bad for Laila because she has to marry an old man who has her father’s age. To protect her baby with Tariq, she has to marry him and live miserable life. When she is pregnant, she still has to do housework, and since she has a baby and Rasheed takes care of her and ignores Mariam. Laila does not have good relationship with Mariam. In an other hand, if I put myself in Mariam’s shoe, I can sympathize what she is feeling. Since Mariam got married to Rasheed, she just knows the feeling to have pregnant, she doesn’t know the feeling to be a mother. So she feels really sad when she sees Laila has pregnant. Moreover, she is told by Rasheed that she will become Laila’s servant. Nobody likes to be other’s servant. Mariam is Rasheed first wife, she lives in the house longer than Laila and she is older than her too. So it is unfair if she has to serve her. Gradually, they get along together and Mariam turns out admiring Laila’s motherhood that she gives to her daughter. Mariam is such a great woman, she defends Laila whenever she is hit by Rasheed; Mariam even kills Rasheed to protect Laila. I think this is good ending because Laila can live with Tariq happy forever after.

    1. I never really thought about what Mariam was thinking because I had been so focused on Laila,I guess I could see what Mariam was going though. She started off with a bad life and her only way to gain a batter one was throne away when she could have kids, than later she died, trying to save someone else but she still had a pretty bad life.

  5. Part Three begins with Laila waking up being taken care of Mariam and Rasheed. Laila is the only survivor of her family. Also a man comes and tells Laila that Tariq is dead. Because of this Laila decides to marry Rasheed because she is scared because she is pregnant with Tariq's kid and would be killed by the Taliban for adultery. At the beginning Rasheed is kind to Laila but this does not last long. Rasheed begins abusing both of them. So they start to have a bond together. And when Laila starts to stand up for Mariam . Mariam begins to like Laila more. Then Laila talks to Mariam about running away. They decide to do it . They get all the way to the train station and get someone to buy them tickets. By telling them that her husband died and they needed tickets. But he told the authorities and they were arrested when they boarded the train. This is when things get worse. He locks them in a room without food or water.Things get even worse when the son tells Rasheed about Tariq visit with Laila. He begins beating her very badly and Mariam steps in to try to stop it . But it does not work at first. So she gets a shovel and hits him with it killing him. she knew she had to do this because Rasheed would have killed both of them if he had the chance too.Mariam knows that if they all run away .They would all be killed by the Taliban. So Mariam tells Laila to run away and find Tariq. And that she would take the blame for it. Mariam is taken to a prison where she is looked at as a hero by the other prisoners. This is because she did what a lot of the other women wish they would have done. All the other prisoners where in there for running away.

    1. Jaedens post contained a lot of information about what had happened in part three. I like that he put in details from beginning to end. Another good point is that he added how the other prisoners were in jail from running away from home.

  6. Part three was very interesting to be, many different things happened that I was sad and happy about. At the beginning we find out that the person who saved Laila was Rasheed and Mariam. At this time Laila is a young adult and had been living with Mariam for a little until she recovered. I was happy that she was alive until Rasheed offered to marry Laila, than I was mad but I understood why she did it, because she was pregnant with Tariq’s baby. I was shocked at that, that she was pregnant and very very happy that it was Tariq’s, but they couldn’t tell Rasheed because she was afraid of what he would do if he found out she wasn’t a virgin. But than it went down again because we ‘learned’ that Tariq had died from news coming from one of Rasheed’s friends. Laila had reacted badly as we could have guessed because they loved each other. After I heard that I kind of thought that he was either dead because it was a sad story or that they were lying because it’s Rasheed’s friends…so I was indifferent than, I kind of hoped he wasn’t dead though. Later after Tariq’s baby was born Laila because pregnant again Tariq came back! All along he wasn’t dead and Rasheed’s friends was lying, and Laila had been thought so much abuse from Rasheed and forming a bond with Mariam and was happy that he was back. Later thought when they try to run, Rasheed had been killed by Mariam and was forced to stay behind and take the blame so Tariq and Laila and the kinds could escape and be safe. Later we learned that Mariam was in jail from a while and eventually executed.

  7. In part three there is a lot going on because Laila found out that she is pregnant with Tariq's baby and both her parents had died when a bomb hit the town. She was wounded but she made a full recovery. Then she was told that Tariq had died when trying to cross the border which was a lie. So Laila married Rasheed because she had to make people think that her baby was Rasheeds. She does all this because she would be killed otherwise. It is hard on her because her and Mariam do not get along. As they live with each other they realize that they have a bond. Mariam kills Rasheed because he found out that they tried to leave. She did this because he was going to kill them. Then Laila finds out that Tariq is still alive. It must be hard to be a women and live in this type of society because they have no say in anything. Their husbands basically rule them and that they can do what ever they want. It must take a lot of courage to what Mariam and Laila did to be able to escape the Taliban. Mariam took the sacrifice and stayed behind to take the punishment for killing her husband and let Laila escape and have a good life with her baby.

    1. I like the details used in your descriptions. Rasheed changed his ways of thinking and began to act more violent towards Laila and Mariam. This affected him later because they killed him.

    2. I like how you used all of the main points from part 3 with good detail. The violence and arguments ended up getting into Mariam's head and she ended up committing murder.

  8. So Laila is brought to Mariam's house because she is in critical condition from the boom. Mariam looks over her for a couple weeks till she is in better condition. Laila soon realizes that she is the only member of her family to survive and she gets depressed. Once Rasheed realizes that Laila needs comfort for her kid and she can get pregnant he wants to marry her. Mariam can't stop it or do anything about it so they get married without a problem. From this point on, Mariam feels betrayed because she spent all her time caring for Laila and then she takes her husband. Mariam got over it because Rasheed never treated her well but she still had to deal with him. Both are sick of the way Rasheed has treated them so they plan to escape from the house but Rasheed finds out and threatens to kill them both. Mariam gets upset and ends up killing Rasheed. Also, in this section, Tariq comes back and surprises Laila. Everyone thought he was dead but they soon find out that Rasheed hired someone to lie so that he could take Laila to be his wife. Tariq and Laila are happy again.

    1. I like how you brought up the main points in part three and left out the points that did not have an affect on the story or any connection to what the entire part was about. That you did not just keep repeating yourself.

  9. Part three had a lot of things happen. It had violence, lies, murder and more. It started out that Mariam and Rasheed took Laila into their home and saved her from the rocket. She nearly died but was lucky that Rasheed found. They discovered that her parents ended up dying in the incident. After Laila started to recover things began to change, Rasheed was excluding Mariam more and more and starting giving attention to Laila. He treated Mariam disrespectfully and even beat her at times. They ended up getting married because Laila was pregnant with Tariq’s baby. Later in the book a man comes to Laila and expresses his sympathy in Tariq’s death. This was hard on Laila because of how hopeful she was that he would return. Rasheed took this to his advantage because she was really depressed and would only focus on her. After reading the chapters about how Mariam started getting jealous about Laila and her relationship with Rasheed I thought they would get more violent with each other. The fact that they had a special bond and acted together against Rasheed surprised me. I didn’t think that they would be brave enough to stand up for themselves or even to attempt to run away. This was courageous on Mariam’s part because she protected Laila and her family. Even though she was against Laila for a while they understood each other and knew it was the right thing to do. I would consider Mariam a hero because she helped out Laila and her family escape. She laid her life down for someone else because she knew what was to come if she decided to flee. Laila’s daughter Aziza showed Mariam that she was important and special.

    1. I think part three it's my favorite because it connects the relationship between Laila, Mariam and Rasheed. In part three, I discovered so many new things as you say violene, murder, lies, etc. I agree that Mariam is a hero because she is sacrificed herself for Laila

  10. Part three begins with Laila waking up to Mariam and Rasheed in their home. She end s up living with them after a bomb had crashed down on her home and killed her parents. She is also delivered heart breaking news about Tariq being dead as well, which we later find out to be a lie. Mariam and Laila do not get along in the beginning, especially since Rasheed ended up marrying Laila. Eventually, after they both suffer from Rasheed, Mariam and Laila settle their differences with a single look. Laila ends up finding out that Tariq is alive and back for her. Mariam ended up killing Rasheed allowing Laila to escape with Tariq and her two kids. Mariam stayed back to face the punishment of prison and later on death.

  11. Part three was about Laila got hit by a rocket, Mariam and Rasheed found her. Rasheed was the one who found her and saved her. Rasheed brought her back to Mariams house where they both live and now Laila. Mariam looks over Laila and takes care of her until shes all better. Laila found out that she is pregnant and its Tariqs. Laila also now knows Tariqs is dead and she will be killed if she isn't with guy when she has the baby. So Rasheed heard that she was pregnant and he knows she will be killed for it. So he talks to Mariam about marring Laila too so she can live with her new baby. After that things got really crazy with the relationships and Mariam got unhappy about them. Rasheed said that he will beat Mariam if Laila wouldn't married him and so Laila say she would. Laila and Mariam make a plan about leaving him but Rasheed found out and so Mariam had to kill him or Rasheed would kill all of them. Then Tariqs comes back and Rasheed had someone lie so Laila would go with him.

  12. Part 3 had a lot of twists and turns. It starts out with Rasheed helping Laila after the rocket came and hit. Rasheed ended up presenting Laila with a ring for her marriage. He got all the money from selling Mariam’s ring. Rasheed was an unloyal person and did not ever love her. Rasheed wants to obviously make Laila his second wife, but Mariam had to tell Laila to warn her. But despite all of that, Laila said yes very quickly. The two start getting into arguments and at one point they kept getting into until Mariam told Laila that she will not speak to her anymore. They end up breaking into small fights and there is a lot of tension in the house with them and its getting out of hand. I do not see how they thought there was not going to be tension in the house because if any guy has more than one wife, the other is going to get jealous of the others at some point. There will constantly be arguments and stupid things going on in the house. During all of these arguments and fights, Laila is still pregnant which is not good for her baby. Rasheed is mad because Laila gave birth to a girl and not a boy like he has wanted this entire time. The baby was always around Mariam, like she thought she was her mom. Whenever Mariam turned away from her, she would cry. Laila and Mariam finally bond one night and Mariam told her life story to Laila. She broke down and started telling Laila everything. Mariam ended up being sent to a women’s prison for murdering Rasheed, which she confessed at her own trial. She was sent to the stadium after 10 days and was executed for committing murder.
