  1. Laila, a neighbor girl that Mariam met at the end of Part 1 is now nine and this entire part is about her life. She is very close with Mariam but throughout this entire part, Mariam's name is hardly ever brought up. Laila has a really close friend named Tariq and he is the same age as her. Tariq lost his leg while traveling to the south by stepping on a land mine but the two's relationship is very caring and loving of each other. About six years pass in this part and both Laila and Tariq are fifteen and Tariqs family gets news that war is breaking out. After a couple days of war, he and his family are forced to flee to Pakastain because of his fathers health. Laila is very upset but she cannot stop him so in much pain, Tariq leaves. He promises that he will come back the second he can but this is one of the most devastating parts in the book. Nothing is going right for either of the families and besides the love between those two, nothing is working out. They are constantly in a time of doom and reading this part made the reader feel depressed for the characters in the book. Life only gets worse for Laila when Tariq leaves and she deals wit constant days of her parents fighting and chaos. Part 2 ends by Laila's house getting hit by a bomb and her falling to the ground going in and out of consciousness.

  2. In the second part we met a girl named Laila, which was only 10 at the time. She was having a conversation with her friend Tariq and he was planning on leaving to go visit his uncle. Laila didn't want him to go but she didn't tell him, when he left she thought about him often. Tariq is Laila's friend also her crush. Tariq only has one leg, for the reason of him being hit by a bomb as a younger kid. Laila often worries about him more because he has one leg. Further into part two, Laila and Tariq grows closer until he starts hanging around with the wrong people and starts smoking and carrying a gun. Laila and her family don't have a good relationship, they don't get along. The only person Laila gets along wit is her father, because he notices her and pays attention. Laila''s mother doesn't pay attention to her, she acts as if she is invisible especially after Laila's brothers dead in the war. Her mother was never happy when they died or even while they were in the army, but she prayed everyday that they would win the war. After they won the war and the Russians were leaving, her mother was herself again. At the end of part two Tariq and his family had to leave the country for safety, but Laila couldn't leave because her mother wouldn't agree to leave. Also at the very ending Laila had got blown up by a bomb near her, and she was seeing things while in air and when she fell back down.

  4. Part two changes over from Mariam's story about her life, to a new story about a girl named Laila. Laila is very good friends with a boy named Tariq. He lost his leg at a very young age from stepping on a land mine. So he has a prosthetic leg now. Laila starts to realize how much she likes Tariq whenhe goes out of town to visit his uncle. She misses him a lot. While Tariq is away, Laila is walking home when a boy points a squirt gun at her and sprays pee all over her. She really does not like this and because of this misses Tariq even more. If Tariq would have been with her none of this would have happened to her. Tariq is gone for a lot longer than he had expected because his uncle had another heart attack. When he is back he flashes his flashlight to let her know. Tariq is very protective of Laila. When he hears what the boy did to her he gets very angry. He then proceeds to chase after the boy and he beats the boy (who shot Laila with pee) with his prosthetic leg. Once Tariq is back she goes to his house to eat with his family. She loves eating with them because they are nice to each other and are pleasant to be around. Laila says she likes eating with Tariq's family as much as she dislikes eating with her own. Laila mother and father do not get along very well. Especially when her father allowed them to go off to war. This got even worse when she found out they were killed in war. All her mother will do is lay in her bed all day. It gets so bad that Laila has to start cooking and doing her mother chores. Over the years Tariq and Laila get very close. This made it that much harder for Laila when Tariq and his family had to flee the country for safety. Laila wanted to go with him but knew it would break her father's heart if she did. Laila nearly gets killed by a bomb when she is outside but she awakes to some women caring for her.

  5. Part two turns into Laila's life story. Part one was all about Mariam and Laila is introduced at the end of it. She is the daughter of Fariba and she has a crush on a boy named Tariq. Laila is getting bullied and a boy shoots her with urine. Tariq steps in and beats the boy with his prosthetic leg. He lost his leg stepping on a land-mine. Tariq ends up leaving and wants Laila to move with him, but she tells him no. I feel like Laila should of went because his parents treated her better than her own. Laila's family gets devastating news of both her brothers deaths. Her mother goes into depression and she feels like she is going to become suicidal. They start to look for husbands for Laila and she doesn't want to marry someone else she is in love with Tariq, but parents believe that he cannot support her.

    1. The comparisons of Laila's father and Mariam's is that Laila's father care more about her and her future. He don't plan on giving Laila away to some strange man and making her enter adulthood early. He actually want her to be successful in life and go to college and open up her own restaurant

  6. When it came to part two I found it very interesting that the main character was no longer Mariam, but Laila. My favorite part from reading this section was when the kid came up to Laila with the squirt gun that had pee in it, and sprayed her with it because she didn’t tell him where her brother was. Then when she told her friend, he goes and beat him with his prosthetic leg. The relationship that Laila and Tariq had was very engaging. Laila found herself caughting feelings for Tariq and it obvious what he has feelings for her as well. When Laila brothers got killed her mother had a hard time and started to shut down, the only thing that kept her alive was redemption for her sons. The mother started to put blame on the father for the death of her sons. She felt that it was his fault for letting them join the war. Laila and her father on the other hand tried to be strong and not get so down on the situation. Laila said that she never cried about the death of her brothers until the day of their funeral. It wasn’t until then when their death had dawn on her. Tariq and his family is going to move away, and Laila wants to do the same. She can’t however because don't want to leave her family behind. Laila’s father wants her to move away and open up own restaurant, he also wants he to go off to college and get an education. Unlike Mariam Father, Laila father isn’t going to make her marry some random man that she doesn’t want to be with. He care about the future of his daughter and wants her to have the best one possible.

    1. Zee has summed up the entire part two well. She even includes her on feelings about what happened. I like that she describes all the detail that is relative to what she is talking about and doesn't leave anything out

    2. I feel like after reading all of the responses, this is the best summary of part 2. She also included relationships of people very well.

  7. Part two was really interesting because we found out about a whole new girl and her life in Afghanistan. They live down the street and she is younger than Mariam and Rasheed. The girl's name is Laila. She has both her parents but her mother is not fond of her and neglects her. The mom's sons died in battle. Laila was shot in the face with urine from a squirt gun by another kid. As Laila grew up she and this boy Tariq became really close friends and Laila developed a crush on him and he didn't as much. Then one day at a celebration and they go off and have sex and are going to get married but Tariq and his family are fleeing the country and he wants Laila to come with them. She says no because it would crush her father. Then their family decides to leave a couple of years later because there is still fighting going on but it is a civil war in the country. Laila's father wants her to escape and find a better life for herself. .

  8. The second part of A Thousand Splendid Suns is starts with meeting a 10 year old girl named Laila. She was talking with one of her best friends named Tariq about him planning to leave to visit his uncle. Then we learn that Tariq is her best friends but that she was crushing hard on him and doesn’t want to leave, but will miss and think about him often. She also worries about him because he only has one leg, he lost his other when he was very young but now he has a prosthetic leg. As Laila is waiting for Tariq he spends more time away because his uncle had another hard attack, Laila is having a hard time dealing with him being gone and an incident comes up when someone has a squirt gun filled with pee. When he returns we find out that he has always liked Laila and is very protective of her, as much as she liked him. Later into part two we find that Laila and Tariq become very close but that their family’s do not get along very well, with each other or themselves, Laila’s parents have a bad relationship. But when their homes are attacked Tariq’s family decides to leave to protect themselves, the couple are heartbroken. After being ‘together’ one last time Tariq leaves and while Laila is alone in her house a rocket hits her house. But in the ruble someone finders her and takes her in to save her.

    1. I like Tegans reply because she went into more detail about giving Lailas specific age. I also like that she used a lot of descriptive wording when describing part two of A Thousand Splendid Suns.

  9. In part two it talks about Laila's story about her life. This part change to a different than Mariam. Talks about her and Tariq who she really liked after he went to his uncle. It talks about when Laila was walking home a kid came up to her with a water gun and he sprays her with it but then she realizes it was pee not water. Laila was thinking about Tariq and she really misses him now. The reason that Tariq had to leave was because his uncle had a hart attack again. When Tariq comes back Laila told him about the boy who sprayed her with pee and Tariq became very mad and beat the boy with his leg that he lost to a bomb for doing it to Laila. Laila found out that her father was killed in the war.

  10. Part two jumps right into a young girl Laila's life story. Part one was all about Mariam and her life, where part two is all about Laila. She is the daughter of Fariba, but does not have a good relationship with her due to her mother always ignoring her and sleeping. Laila is very much a daddies girl; she would never leave her father. Another man in her life is a boy named Tariq, who she later falls in love with. Laila was getting bullied by a mean boy in her neighborhood while her "protector" Tariq was away. The bully went as far as to shoot her with urine out of a watergun. Once Tariq was home again he stepped in and beat the boy with his prosthetic leg. He had lost his leg during his last trip by stepping on a land-mine. Later on, Tariq ended up leaving and begged Laila to move with him, but she refused, knowing she couldn't leave her family behind. I believe Laila should have left with Tariq because his parents treated her better than her own and she loved him. Laila's family gets devastating news of both her brothers deaths. Her mother goes into an even deeper depression and she feels like her mother is going to become suicidal, but she insists she is not. The whole town gathers at their home to comfort Fariba and pay their respects. Laila's parents started to look for husbands for Laila, but she didn't want to marry anyone else because she is still in love with and waiting for Tariq. Her parents believe that he cannot support her in the way she needs, but Laila knows Tariq is the man for her.

  11. Laila has different life from Mariam. She has dedicated father who always care about her. I feel her mother is too aggressive to her father because he lets her two sons go into the war and they eventually die. That’s why she always pray for Mujahideen’s victory which is an irony because he finally betrays his own country. Laila luckily has Tariq who has one leg as her brother who always protects her. I think she loves him and he loves her too. I can understand why she loves to eat at Tariq’s house because they are very gentle to her and they consider her as a member of their family. I can’t imagine my life with careless mother and dedicated father and they always argue. As an other girl at that time, she is bullied by the boys and the squirt the gun with pee to her. If I was her, I would stand up then punch them into their faces because I cannot stand how rude they are. I feel really bad for Giti who is Laila’s best friend because she was killed by the bomb. When Tariq tells Laila to leave with him, she should have gone and she should have told her parents to flee too because they are eventually killed by the bomb when they are packing in the house. This is the dystopia world that I cannot imagine. People will die anytime, everything is in chaos and people are not safe.

    1. I agree Laila and Mariam both had very different lives but similar as well. They went through many hardships and both lived through family relationship problems.

  12. Part 2 starts out with this girl named Laila was with a guy named Khadim and he was holding a squirt gun. She was frightened because she did not know if that was a squirt gun or a normal gun. He ended up spraying her with a very weird smelling liquid and mocked her about Tariq a lot. The weird thing is that she was sprayed with Khadim’s urine. Laila has been waiting for a long time for Tariq to return but he did not come back when he was supposed too. I feel it kind of weird that he would spray her with his own urine. Why would he even think about doing that? I just find that a little weird. Then she was eating and there was a knock on the door and it was one of her brothers comrades in the war coming to her house to tell her that they were dead. I would hate to have that job if I were the guy coming to people’s families to tell them that their kids died in battle. Even though Laila did not care that much, she only cared about that Tariq was alive. When Tariq told Laila that he was leaving for Pakistan, she was devastated. But then something happened to where she thought it was a miracle. Her mammy agreed to leave Afghanistan. But then a bomb hit her house and another bad thing happened to her.

  13. This part of the book starts out with Laila. Laila has a best friend Tariq who is a neighbor. They consider themselves best friends or almost like brother and sister. Tariq leaves for a trip with his family and Laila can hardly wait until he gets back. She expresses that she feels safe and happy with his family whenever she goes there for dinner. They always spend time together and trust each other with everything. Part two also has many war related events happen such as bombs, threats, the Taliban. Tariq has only one leg because of a mine explosion, but this doesn’t stop him from protecting Laila when another kid bullies her. The soviets also end up coming and leaving Kabul in this part. After things get bad in Kabul people start to flee. Tariq and his family decide that they will leave for Pakistan. When he tells this to Laila she becomes devastated. She can’t help the thought that her best friend and brother are leaving her. This is after the fact that their relationship got even closer both physically and emotionally. They share a first kiss and end up having sex before he leaves. Tariq promises Laila that she will be back and shes left day dreaming about him. After I read this I knew that Tariq would keep his promise. It seemed that he was a trustworthy and caring guy who was really in love with Laila. At the end there was an explosion and Laila’s parents ended up dying and she was knocked out.

    1. I would have to disagree that they looked at each other as best friends because they began to like each other. If you look at each other you see one another as family and things well never changes and you wouldn't grow feelings as they did.

Tariq lost his leg early in his life by stepping on a land mine. When Tariq goes out of town with his uncle that's when Laila realizes she really likes him because she began to miss him. Laila loves to eat with Tariq family because everyone is nice and pleasant and can have dinner without fighting. Something she always wanted in a family. Laila family doesn't get along to well specially after her dad allowed her brother to go to war. To make the situation worst they find out that their sons have been murdered in battle. Her moms gets so lazy Laila has to pick up on her mother wife duties. Tariq family flee's the country and he wanted to bring Laila but she didn't want to leave her dad alone. Laila house gets bomb while she's outside and her dad was still in the house. Now she thinks of Tariq and going to Pakistan.
